Scholarship Application Instructions

This page is only intended to be a guide for students who wish to prepare for the scholarship application.  Even if they use this page to prepare, students should read the instructions in the application carefully and follow them exactly.

By filling out this application, you will be considered for any scholarships for which you are eligible.

2024-2025 Application Instructions

Acknowledgements

• Enrollment expectation: This application is intended to support full-time, regularly-enrolled students seeking a bachelor's or higher degree from the Moody College of Communication. Full-time means 12 hours per long semester for undergraduates; 9 for graduate students. Exceptions to the full-time enrollment policy are only under certain circumstances. Unless otherwise noted, all awards are for fall/spring semesters.
• Change in status: Please contact the Moody College immediately if (a) you are currently an undergraduate student at UT but will be a graduate student in the 2024-2025 academic year; or (b) you are an incoming graduate student in Fall 2023 but attended UT as an undergraduate at any time. Failure to do so could disqualify you from scholarship eligibility.
• Need-Based Scholarships: US Citizens: If you wish to be considered for any need-based scholarships, you must submit the CURRENT YEAR'S FAFSA (2024-2025). International Students who are not eligible to file the FAFSA must complete the International Student Financial Worksheet. In very rare cases, we may accept the Financial Need essay within this application as a substitution for these official financial need documents. The Scholarship Portal (application entry page) will display your current status regarding need-based aid.
• SB 1325: Texas Senate Bill 1325 renders a person ineligible to receive these scholarships if the person is related to a current member of the UT System Board of Regents, except for in certain circumstances.  If you are related to a current member of the UT System Board of Regents, you must contact the Moody College via the email address below before the scholarship application deadline to disclose this relationship.  Failure to do so can result in a Class B misdemeanor offense.

Activities

You will be asked to list up to five activities in each of the following categories:

• Clubs and Other Extracurricular Activities
• Jobs and Internships
• Leadership Roles and Description of Responsibilities

Statement of Purpose

Your prompt will vary depending on your classification

Undergraduate students: Write a statement of purpose explaining why you are pursuing a degree in Communication and what you plan to do after graduation. Please explain why the Moody College of Communication should invest in you and what academic or industry contribution you aspire to make during your career. (max. 300 words)

Graduate students: 
a) Write a statement describing your plan of study and potential benefit you would receive from this financial assistance. (max. 300 words)
b) You MUST also submit your resume/CV by the scholarship application deadline. You will be asked to upload this resume from the main Scholarship Portal page.

Moody College of Communication Questions

1. How many hours to do you plan to take in Summer 2024?
2. Do you expect to enroll full-time in both Fall 2024 and Spring 2025?  If not, please list how many hours you plan to take in the fall, the spring, and the reason for your reduced enrollment.
3. Are you a member of the University of Texas Debate Team?
4. Are you a member of the Moody College Honors Program?
5. Have you ever lived in Oklahoma? (If awarded, you will be required to provide documentation to show that you have lived in or matriculated from Oklahoma.) 

Department Application

If you are associated with more than one academic department in the Moody College of Communication, you may apply to either or all departments.

If you plan to apply for internal transfer to a Moody major not listed below and you also wish to apply for scholarships from that department, please email us. Be sure to include your EID and the name of the major that you are seeking.

All applicants must select at least one department.

Advertising and Public Relations:

To qualify for certain specific awards, please answer the following questions:

• Which sequence are you in, or do you plan to apply to? (Creative; Media; Immersive; I don't know/Don't plan to apply)

Communication and Leadership:

Please answer the following prompt: How can a leader best serve her or his community? Why do you want to major in Communication and Leadership? (max. 300 words)

Communication Studies:

To qualify for certain specific awards, please answer the following question:

Please answer the following prompt:  The University of Texas has a slogan that says "What Starts Here Changes the World." How will an award from the College enable you to take your part in changing the world? (max. 300 words)

Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences:

Please answer the following prompt:  How does the field of SLH impact our lives today? (max. 300 words)

Journalism:

To qualify for certain specific awards, please answer the following questions:

1. Which of these options best describes your US residency status: US Citizen; Naturalized citizen with at least 10 years residence in the US; Permanent US resident; Other
2. Please rate your Spanish fluency: Fluent; Very good; Moderate; Fair; Beginner; Not at all
3. Do you have plans to complete an internship during the upcoming summer semester?
4. Are you pursuing the Business Minor?
5. If you are a member of any professional student organizations, please list them here. For example, Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ); the Daily Texan/TSM is NOT a professional organization. (Even if you have already listed the organization(s) in the Extracurricular Activities section, please list them again).
6. If you participated in any UIL Journalism events while you were in high school please list them here.
